Sedgwick County Technical Education and Training Authority (SCTETA) oversees local technical education – including Wichita Area Technical College. Six of 11 board members are from local private industry and provide guidance on current relevant training needs. SCTETA is overseeing development of the $54 million (222,000 square foot) National Center for Aviation Training, a world-class aviation and advanced general manufacturing training center on the grounds of Jabara Airport in northeast Wichita. SCTETA projects at least 1,200 aviation and 1,800 general manufacturing graduates per year. The facility has received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval. Groundbreaking occurred in March 2008, and classes at the site are slated to begin in 2010.

Wichita Area Technical College is a public institution providing hands-on job skills training in 30 occupational programs. About 12,000 adult and high school students receive WATC training annually. WATC offers day and evening classes at seven sites in the Wichita area. Students earn certificates, diplomas and associate degrees. WATC’s training staff design and deliver cost-effective customized training programs specific to an industry or company in conjunction with state training incentives – delivered on-site or at any of the WATC campuses. About a third of WATC students are completing customized training for specific industries. Programs include: CATIA, CAD-CAM, Avionics, HVAC, Computer Information Systems & Networking, Electrical Trades, Machining Technology, Manufacturing Technology and Welding.

Butler County Community College is a public two-year institution offering programs in industrial technology, business, nursing and liberal arts. Enrollment is 8,400.

Cowley County Community College and Area Vocational-Technical School is a public two-year institution offering programs in accounting, business, aviation maintenance technology, drafting, industrial arts, machine and tool technology, manufacturing technology, non-destructive testing, welding and liberal arts. Enrollment is 5,000.

Hutchinson Community College and Area Vocational School is a public two-year institution offering programs in manufacturing engineering technology, electronic engineering technology, computer technology, computerized drafting, business, health care and liberal arts. Enrollment is 4,600.

Wichita Technical Institute  is a private training firm providing hands-on training programs in electronics technology, computer electronics and networking technology, and HVAC. WTI also has customized training programs for industry. Enrollment is 350.

Vatterott College  is a private technical training institution offering 14-month diploma programs in computer-aided drafting, electrical mechanic, HVAC-R, computer technology, computer programming and medical office assistant. Local enrollment is 300.
